Ally managed to drag Gramps away from the funeral after forty minutes, which included listening to people chatting about the horror of another murder taking place in Willow Bluff. They hadn’t learned anything new after the conversation between Marlie and Jake, and Ally was weary of the whole thing.

Last night she’d wanted nothing more than to help crack the case to protect Gramps, but today she yearned to stay far away.

Too bad she didn’t have enough clients coming to the clinic to take her mind off the murder.

“I have an idea,” Gramps said, after she’d gotten him settled in the car.

She inwardly groaned. “No more ideas, Gramps, please? I’m exhausted.”

“This one is easy,” Gramps insisted. “Remember what I said about having Domino at the funeral?”

“Yes, why?”

“I think we should take Domino for a walk toward Jake’s apartment, see how he responds to the kid’s scent.” Gramps eyed her curiously. “Maybe that would be enough for that detective of yours to take him into custody.”

“It’s not enough, Gramps.” Although she couldn’t deny his idea had merit. “And I don’t think today’s a good day.”

“But we have to take the dog over there today. The Bentons are picking him up sometime soon, aren’t they?”

Again, he had a point. In fact, she was rather surprised she hadn’t heard from Kayla already.

Domino and Roxy did both need to be walked. She really didn’t want to do this, but she hoped that if she did, then maybe Gramps would return to the Legacy House without complaint.

And maybe I’m the Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland.

“Come on, Ally,” Gramps pressed. “It won’t take that long.”

“Fine.” She caved the way she always did. “But after that, I take you home, okay?”

There was a slight hesitation before Gramps agreed. “Okay.”

She shot him a narrow look. “I mean it, Gramps. I’ll humor you for a while longer, but then I need to focus on my business. I haven’t had a grooming appointment all week and need to run some sort of fall special to draw in some new customers.”

“Okay, okay.” Gramps threw up his hands. “This is the last thing I’ll ask of you.”

She snorted. “Yeah, right.”

“The last thing I’ll ask of you today,” Gramps clarified with a wry grin.

“Now that I believe.” Ally shook her head and drove back to the clinic. “Stay in the car. I’ll get Domino out and put him in the back.”

“Sounds good,” Gramps agreed. Of course, he was always agreeable once he’d gotten his way.

Cagey old man, she thought with affection. As much as he drove her crazy, she’d be devastated and heartbroken without him.

Taking Domino out of his kennel, she winced at Roxy’s reproachful gaze. “I’ll put you upstairs in the apartment while you wait for your turn, okay?”

Roxy stood at the top of the stairs, watching as she led Domino outside.

Ally put Domino in the back hatch, then slid behind the wheel. “We can’t be too long. Roxy needs to go out too.”

“I know.” Gramps leaned forward eagerly. “I hope Jake is at the apartment.
